Empowering Independence for People with Intellectual Disabilities
At EnableU, we believe that everyone—regardless of ability—deserves the opportunity to live with dignity, purpose, and connection. Our team delivers practical, respectful support for people with intellectual disabilities across Newcastle and the Hunter Region, focusing on increasing independence at home and in the community.
What Is Intellectual Disability?
Intellectual disability (ID) refers to limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviour. It may impact skills like communication, self-care, social interaction, and problem-solving.
Common causes include genetic conditions, prenatal exposure, or brain injury. Support needs can vary significantly from person to person—and so should support plans.
Our Individualised Support Services
EnableU develops support plans in partnership with each client and their family. Services may include:
- Daily living support (hygiene, meals, routines)
- Learning life skills like cooking, budgeting or laundry
- Help with communication tools and assistive devices
- Support to navigate public transport
- Participation in classes, work programs or volunteering
- Community engagement and social events
Why Independence Matters
Gaining confidence and self-sufficiency has wide-reaching benefits. It improves mental health, reduces stress for families, and empowers people with disability to express themselves and make their own choices.
Our role is to support—not take over. We aim to gradually reduce dependency while keeping safety and wellbeing at the centre.
Skill Building at Every Stage of Life
We support people with intellectual disabilities across all life stages—from teenagers learning to use public transport, to adults preparing meals, or older clients learning to manage medication with reminders.
We also work closely with families, support coordinators, and therapists to ensure the care plan evolves as the person grows.
How We Match Support Workers
Our team takes time to match the right support worker based on personality, communication style, culture, and care needs. Building trust is vital—especially when supporting people with communication challenges or previous trauma.
We also offer language-matched workers when available to support CALD participants.
